2025 Budget Reconciliation: What It Means for Your Healthcare Coverage

2025 Budget Reconciliation

Congress is debating the 2025 federal budget, which means changes to Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (ACA) are on their way. The proposed changes could lead to a large increase in the uninsured population, potentially walking back progress since the Affordable Care Act was implemented in 2014. At AAA Minneapolis Insurance Agency, we're committed to keeping you informed about changes as they happen and helping you navigate the evolving healthcare landscape.

Proposed and Impending Changes

  1. Expiration of ACA Tax Credits: The tax credits passed by Congress in the American Rescue Plan Act and the Inflation Reduction Act are set to expire at the end of 2025. These credits have reduced payments for insured individuals significantly, and have nearly doubled the amount of eligible individuals since 2020.
  2. Introduction of Medicare Work Requirements: The proposed legislation would increase the frequency of eligibility checks and enforce work requirements. These hurdles, and the proposed additional red tape will result in many people losing their coverage.
  3. Additional Rules Regarding Enrollment: The legislation proposes shortening the enrollment period by a full month, which may limit access for some individuals. Legislation also proposes tightening the eligibility for people to apply for healthcare during special enrollment periods, which are triggered by qualifying life events and healthcare changes.

According to the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), these proposed changes could result in at least 13.7 million more uninsured individuals by 2034. This projection underscores the importance of understanding and preparing for these shifts in healthcare policy.
